希臘人設(shè)想的地球上的平行斜坡希臘人很早就發(fā)現(xiàn)一個(gè)地區(qū)的氣候與太陽光線的傾斜角度有關(guān)。越靠近赤道，太陽光傾角越大，氣候就越溫暖；越靠近極點(diǎn)，太陽光傾角越小，氣候就越寒冷。我們現(xiàn)在知道，不同地區(qū)太陽光傾角不同，是因?yàn)榈厍蚴菆A的。但古代的希臘人還不知道，依然認(rèn)為地球是平的，只是不同地區(qū)有不同的坡度，地區(qū)坡度的不同造成了太陽光傾角的不同。因此，他們將地球劃分成很多塊邊線平行的斜坡，每條斜坡的坡度都有所不同，這些平行的斜坡就是希臘人劃分的氣候帶，在希臘語中稱為klima，字面意思是“斜坡”。古希臘人將世界劃分為7個(gè)氣候帶，古希臘著名的天文學(xué)家和地理學(xué)家托勒密（Ptolemy）將世界從赤道到北極劃分為24個(gè)氣候帶。英語單詞climate（氣候）就來自希臘語klima。而英語單詞lean（傾斜）與此同源，來自希臘語klinein（傾斜）。
