19世紀前期蘇格蘭工程師John L.MacAdam發明了碎石鋪路法，一個出版其姓氏，表示“碎石路面”的詞macadam便應運而生，隨后又由此派生出macadamize（用碎石鋪路）一詞。到了20世紀初，又有許多人不停地在想辦法改進路面。1901年諾丁漢郡一位名叫胡利的鄉村巡視員發現德比郡德比鎮一家鐵廠附近有段公路盡管交通繁忙，但路面卻平整堅硬。他一打聽方知原來曾有一架馬車在此撒下一桶柏油，后因無法收拾便拉來爐渣，摻在一起抹平了事。胡利受此啟發，翌年春制成用柏油和煤渣等摻合的鋪路材料，并取得該項發明的專利，此后不久又成立了一家聯合公司，專門生產此種鋪路材料，以Tarmac作為商標名。Tarmac系由tar（柏油）與macadam（碎石路面）二詞縮合而成。1905年該公司改稱Tarmac公司。第二次世界大戰期間，它曾受命于英國政府為大型機場修筑道路。tarmac現在已經不再是商標名，它已經轉化為普通名詞，指“（鋪路用的）柏油碎石混合料”或“柏油碎石路面”。
