英語中的queue于16世紀直接借自法語，拼法和法語完全一樣，而原法語詞queue則來源于拉丁語cauda（尾巴），所以queue在英語中的原始詞義也是“尾巴”，18世紀時轉指“辮子”，此義至今仍在使用。到了19世紀初queue在法語中從本義引申出“（人、車等的）行列”，“長隊”一義，queue在英語中也被賦予了此義，且在以后轉類為動詞，表示“排隊”。美國英語stand in line（排隊）相當于英國英語queue up。queue在美國英語中幾乎不用。
