在古希臘和古羅馬時期，語法就已經成為學校教育中的一個重要科目，屬于“七藝”（邏輯、語法、修辭、數學、幾何、天文、音樂）之一。表示“語法”的英語單詞grammar就來自希臘語grammatike（文字的、字母的），是gramma（字母）的形容詞，而gramma則來自graphein（畫、寫）。希臘語grammatike在拉丁文中拼寫為grammatica，進入法語后變為gramaire，最后演變為英語單詞grammar。來源相同的英語單詞還有diagram（圖表）、graph（圖形）、program（程序）。
