國際象棋中向對方的國王"將一軍"，英語叫check，它同chess一起，都是從古波斯語shah(國王)演變來的。Shah進入古法語后寫作eschec，進入古英語時寫作chek，后來才寫作check，意思是提醒對方我下一步就要吃掉你的國王了。最初只限于象棋中的"將一軍"之義，后來才伸展為今天的"制止"、"檢查"等詞義。而古法語eschec的復數形式eschecs進入古英語后寫作ches，以后才變為chess，原來"將一軍"的復數，而國際象棋chess，就是連續將軍的游戲。=另外，古波斯人稱象棋中"把對方將死"為shah-mat,mat是"死"的意思；今天英語也說check-mate，這可不是"棋友"，而是"把對方將死"的意思，這里的mate是波斯語mat的譯音。=check[t?ek]n支票，核實v核實，檢查，打鉤，將一軍。=chess[t?es]n國際象棋。
