羅馬帝國的開國皇帝奧古斯都（Augustus），原名屋大維（Octavius）。他是愷撒大帝的甥孫及義子。在凱撒被刺死后，成為凱撒的繼承人，他依靠高超的政治手腕，逐步掌握了羅馬的軍政大權，最終成為羅馬帝國真正的開國皇帝。公元前27年，羅馬元老院因為其卓越功勛而授予他Augustus（拉丁文意為“神圣的、威嚴的”）的稱號，后世即用此稱之。為了和凱撒齊名，他也想用自己的名字來命名一個月份。他的生日在9月，但他卻選擇了8月，因為8月在其政治與軍事生涯中是個吉利的月份，羅馬元老院也是在8月授予他Augustus（奧古斯都）這個尊號的。于是，他決定用這個尊號來命名8月。原來8月比7月少一天，為了和凱撒平起平坐，他又決定從2月中抽出一天加在8月上。從此，2月便少了一天。于是從公元前8年起，8月改名為Augustus。Augustus一詞進入英語后演變為August。這就是August（八月）的由來。所以，英語中的8月（August）實際上就是由這位羅馬皇帝的拉丁語尊號演變而來。
